More than a third of the nearly 2,000 flights scheduled to land in Catania between August 6 and 12 were cancelled outright, according to airport operator SAC, as ash from an unusually persistent eruption of Mount Etna forced the closure of Sicily's busiest airport for the better part of ten days at the height of the summer travel season. By Sunday, flight operations at Catania, Fontanarossa had largely normalized, with only a handful of cancellations remaining on the airport's schedule board, according to Flightradar24 tracking data cited in weekend reporting. The episode, which SAC described as the most severe operational disruption to the airport's infrastructure in 20 years, has become a case study in how a geologically routine event can still overwhelm a regional aviation and tourism system built with little redundancy.

Etna, one of the most closely monitored volcanoes on Earth, erupts frequently enough that Catania airport maintains standing protocols for ash closures. What made this episode different, according to Boris Behncke, a researcher with Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, was not the intensity of the eruption but its duration. "There have been many shorter interruptions and stronger eruptions over the past few decades," Behncke said, but the persistence of ash emissions from the summit vents set this event apart. A colleague at the institute, Mario Mattia, later noted that the combination of prolonged ash output and unusually steady southerly winds pushed the plume directly over the airport's approach corridors for days at a stretch, according to DPA reporting, rather than dispersing it as wind patterns more typically do.

The mechanics of the shutdown were straightforward but unforgiving. Italy's Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation stayed at red, the highest of four alert tiers, for most of the week, reflecting the risk that ash poses to jet engines and flight-critical sensors. Ash ingested by a turbine can melt and re-solidify on internal components, degrading thrust or causing flameouts, while abrasive particles can pit windscreens and contaminate air-data systems, hazards the European Union Aviation Safety Agency has flagged in its own guidance on volcanic-ash operations, according to Airways magazine's summary of the agency's bulletins. Because there is no margin for error on those risks, regulators default to blanket suspensions rather than case-by-case routing around the plume, which is why a relatively contained natural hazard translated into a near-total shutdown of Italy's fifth-busiest airport by passenger traffic.

Eruptive vents at roughly 2,750 metres and 2,360 metres on the volcano's flanks fed the extended activity, sending both lava flows and ash plumes that repeatedly shifted direction with the wind, according to updates INGV issued through the closure and cited by Reuters. At points during the eruption, the plume drifted far beyond Sicily itself, with lighter ash concentrations reaching Malta and as far as northern Libya, according to bulletins from the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre referenced by Euronews. That reach forced Malta's international airport to manage its own intermittent disruptions even though the eruption's source lay more than 300 kilometres away, illustrating how a localized geological event can ripple across a much wider stretch of Mediterranean airspace than the immediate closure numbers suggest.

The closure's cost radiated outward from the runway. Roughly 630 flights were diverted to Palermo, Trapani, Comiso and Lamezia Terme between August 6 and 12, according to figures Reuters obtained from SAC, overwhelming airports that were never built to absorb Catania's traffic. Comiso, a small regional field pressed into service as an overflow hub, was itself forced to close briefly when ash drifted over its runway too. On the ground, the strain showed up in more mundane but telling ways: taxi fares and car-rental prices in the diversion cities rose sharply enough that Italy's Codacons consumer association said it would file a complaint with the national competition authority, according to Euronews reporting on the price increases documented by the Corriere della Sera newspaper. State rail operator Trenitalia added six extra trains along the Palermo, Messina, Catania corridor to help move stranded travelers by land.

The timing amplified the damage. The shutdown spanned Ferragosto, the mid-August holiday when much of Italy travels, and it landed squarely on resort towns like Taormina and Syracuse that depend on a short summer window for the bulk of their annual revenue. "We've had a great many last-minute cancellations," Gerhard Schuler of the Federalberghi Taormina hoteliers' association told the newspaper La Repubblica, adding that "these are truly difficult times," according to a DPA dispatch. Hoteliers in the affected resorts reported vacant rooms during what should have been peak occupancy and said some properties had already cut prices to draw in remaining bookings.

Quantifying the toll precisely is difficult while the situation was still unfolding, but the Sicilian small-business association Assoesercenti produced an early estimate: tourist spending exposed to the disruption ranged from roughly €12.8 million to €24 million over just the first four days of closure, depending on assumptions about what share of daily passengers were leisure travelers and how much each spent, according to the association's analysis reported by Italian outlets including Rai News. The group was explicit that the figure represented exposed spending rather than confirmed losses, since the real toll would only emerge from a direct accounting of cancellations, shortened stays, refunds and lost bookings. Separate estimates cited by Bloomberg put the number of affected travelers at around 100,000.

Because the disruption stemmed from a natural hazard rather than an airline operational failure, passengers whose flights were cancelled are not entitled to the fixed compensation of €250 to €600 that EU261 rules would otherwise require for controllable disruptions. Airlines still owe duty-of-care obligations, including meals, accommodation and rebooking, but the financial burden of the standstill fell disproportionately on travel agencies and tour operators managing rebookings with no compensation flowing back from carriers. That imbalance prompted Italy's federation of travel agencies and tour operators to publicly push back. "Operators are working around the clock to provide assistance, cancellations and alternative travel arrangements, but they cannot bear the burden of structural shortcomings and the management responsibilities of others," FIAVET president Gian Mario Pilieri said in a statement reported by Euronews. The federation's Sicilian branch called for a permanent coordination body linking the regional government, civil-protection authorities, air-traffic control and the airports themselves, along with a unified real-time information system, arguing the recurring crisis reflects an organizational gap rather than an unpredictable act of nature.

Conditions eased over the weekend. Italian authorities downgraded Etna's aviation alert from red to orange on Saturday morning, and SAC restarted departures and arrivals from Catania that afternoon, according to a Reuters report on the reopening. France's Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, which tracks the plume across the Mediterranean, reported by Sunday morning that no ash was identifiable in satellite imagery and forecast none over the following 18 hours, describing the remaining activity as a weak eruption confined near the summit. INGV's monitoring station readings placed volcanic tremor at what the observatory classifies as normal activity levels heading into the new week.

The episode leaves a narrower but persistent question for Sicilian tourism officials and airport planners: whether a volcano that erupts on a predictable cycle should still be treated as an emergency each time, or whether the region needs permanent contingency infrastructure, faster inter-airport transfers and pre-negotiated diversion capacity, to keep a recurring geological event from repeatedly becoming an economic one.
