More than 183,000 utility customers across Hawaii remained without electricity Sunday afternoon, while state officials had received reports of at least 100 damaged homes, after Hurricane Lala swept heavy rain and destructive winds across the island chain before weakening into a tropical storm, according to Reuters. The storm never delivered the direct landfall that had been feared, but the scale of the outages, flooding and transportation disruptions demonstrates why a near miss can still produce statewide consequences in an island system where electricity, roads, ports and communications have limited redundancy.
The numbers also changed dramatically as Lala moved west. PowerOutage.us data cited by Reuters showed 183,123 customers without power at 3:30 p.m. Hawaii time Sunday, including roughly 130,000 on Oahu earlier in the day. The Associated Press had recorded fewer than 60,000 outages at 9:30 a.m., after more than 200,000 had lost service overnight, illustrating how restoration on one part of the grid was being offset by new failures as tropical-storm conditions migrated from the Big Island toward Oahu and Kauai. At least three hospitals were operating on generators during the disruption, according to Gov. Josh Green.
A storm did not need to make landfall to overwhelm local systems
Lala passed close enough to the Big Island for hurricane-force conditions to tear down trees, flood roads and push waterways beyond their banks. The National Weather Service said two homes were swept away, while Hawaii County authorities launched search-and-rescue operations involving Civil Defense, the National Guard and a Coast Guard helicopter after flash floods apparently carried occupied homes off their foundations near Na'alehu and Wai'ohinu. Honolulu crews, farther west in the storm's path, responded before dawn Sunday to 58 reports of downed trees, 39 damaged roofs, 12 downed power lines and 12 electrical-arcing incidents, according to the AP.
Rainfall, rather than sustained hurricane winds alone, appears to have produced some of the most difficult recovery conditions. The AP reported that some high-elevation locations on the Big Island received as much as 35 inches of rain, while floodwater, mud, boulders and fallen vegetation obstructed roads. Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda described rescue conditions as particularly difficult because crews were confronting fast-moving water, debris and darkness simultaneously. Those conditions also slowed utility crews trying to reach damaged transmission and distribution equipment.
At least one person died in a vehicle crash near South Point during the storm, though authorities had not established that the death was directly caused by Lala. That distinction matters in preliminary disaster reporting: storm-period deaths are not automatically classified as storm fatalities until investigators determine the circumstances. Officials reported about 117 people in emergency shelters Sunday morning, while all state airports had reopened by later in the day. Travelers were still being advised to verify individual flights because reopening an airport does not immediately restore normal airline operations.
Hawaii's geography turns utility failures into a different kind of risk
Hawaii's recovery problem differs structurally from one on the continental United States. Each island relies heavily on its own electric system, and crews cannot simply draw unlimited personnel, replacement transformers, bucket trucks and other heavy equipment from neighboring states by road. Damage that would be logistically difficult on the mainland can therefore become slower and more complicated when replacement equipment and specialized workers must move by air or sea.
That vulnerability became visible Sunday as the storm's impacts migrated across the islands. The Big Island was dealing with flash flooding and washed-out routes just as damaging winds reached Oahu; Kauai was still being warned to remain sheltered after some other counties had their tropical-storm warnings discontinued. Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency continued to warn of electrical hazards, dangerous debris, contaminated areas and limited road visibility, advising residents not to make unnecessary trips through damaged areas.
The sequence is important because disaster recovery does not begin everywhere at once. Utility crews may be able to restore one circuit while another fails hours later. Airports may reopen while access roads remain compromised. Hospitals can remain functional on emergency generation while the neighborhoods around them are dark. The statewide outage number therefore represents more than households waiting for lights to return; it measures the number of connections dependent on a repair system operating across multiple islands while the hazard itself is still moving.
The immediate danger is receding, but secondary hazards remain
By Sunday afternoon, Lala had weakened to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph and was moving west toward southwest Kauai County at about 20 mph. The National Hurricane Center's projected track would carry the storm clear of the Hawaiian Islands by Monday morning if it continued as expected. Warnings had already been dropped for Maui and Oahu counties while remaining in effect for Kauai County.
Weakening winds do not eliminate the risks that accumulate behind a tropical cyclone. Flooded electrical equipment can remain energized; unstable slopes can fail after rainfall ends; contaminated floodwater can enter homes and businesses; and downed trees can keep secondary roads impassable long after major highways reopen. HIEMA specifically warned residents to use extreme caution because debris, contamination and electrical hazards would persist in damaged areas.
The most consequential measure of Lala may therefore not be its final wind speed or whether its center technically crossed land. At least 100 damaged homes, more than 180,000 customers still without electricity in one late-Sunday snapshot, emergency generators operating at hospitals and search teams working around flood-damaged communities constitute a significant infrastructure event regardless of the storm's official landfall status. The next phase will be measured less by meteorological categories than by how rapidly Hawaii can restore electricity, reopen local roads, assess housing damage and determine which communities absorbed losses that are not yet visible in statewide totals.
