CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple this week unveiled Vision Pro, a $3,499 mixed-reality headset that the company calls its first “spatial computer,” opening a new product category with a device that places digital applications inside a user’s physical surroundings and is controlled primarily by eye movement, hand gestures and voice. The headset is scheduled to become available in the United States early next year, giving Apple months to court developers and refine applications before asking consumers to pay more than the price of many high-end computers.

Apple’s June 5 announcement says Vision Pro uses an ultra-high-resolution display system with 23 million pixels across two screens, a custom dual-chip design built around Apple’s M2 processor and a new R1 chip, and a three-dimensional interface running on a new operating system called visionOS. The device can show conventional applications as floating windows, expand movies into large virtual screens, capture spatial photos and video and move along a spectrum from augmented reality to more immersive virtual environments.

Apple is defining the category on its own terms

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple deliberately avoided centering the product on the familiar labels “virtual reality” and “metaverse.” Instead, the company’s WWDC23 presentation framed Vision Pro as the beginning of “spatial computing,” language intended to position the device as a general-purpose computing platform rather than a gaming accessory or entertainment headset.

The interface is central to that argument. Users select items by looking at them, tap their fingers together to click, flick their hands to scroll and dictate or speak commands. The Guardian’s account of the launch described the eye, hand and voice controls and Apple’s EyeSight feature, which uses an outward-facing display to show a representation of the wearer’s eyes when someone approaches. Apple says the design is meant to reduce the social isolation associated with opaque headsets by signaling whether the user is engaged with the physical room or immersed in digital content.

The hardware is designed around latency and presence

Vision Pro combines Apple’s M2 chip with the new R1 processor, which is dedicated to handling input from the device’s cameras, sensors and microphones. Apple says the R1 processes data fast enough to stream new images to the displays within about 12 milliseconds, an engineering target intended to make digital objects appear stable as the wearer moves. The company also says the two micro-OLED displays contain more pixels than a 4K television for each eye.

A TechCrunch hardware report detailed the headset’s array of cameras and sensors, its Digital Crown for adjusting immersion and its separate battery pack. Apple says the external battery provides about two hours of general use, while the headset can operate all day when connected to power. That battery arrangement illustrates one of the product’s central tradeoffs: Apple is trying to keep weight off the face while still powering intensive real-time graphics, sensing and computation.

MacRumors’ launch summary highlighted the laminated-glass front, aluminum-alloy frame, modular Light Seal and head band, and optical inserts for users who need vision correction. Those details matter because comfort and fit have been persistent barriers to extended headset use, especially for a device Apple is presenting as suitable for work as well as entertainment.

visionOS gives developers a new Apple platform

The software proposition may matter as much as the hardware. Apple is launching visionOS as a distinct operating system with familiar frameworks for developers, a three-dimensional interface and support for existing iPhone and iPad applications where appropriate. That gives Apple a large software ecosystem to draw from rather than requiring the product to begin with an empty application store.

Apple demonstrated productivity applications, FaceTime, immersive media and entertainment experiences during the keynote. Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger appeared at the event and said Disney+ would be available on Vision Pro at launch, a commitment covered by TechCrunch. Apple also emphasized compatibility with Bluetooth accessories and the ability to extend a Mac display into the headset, positioning Vision Pro as a companion to existing computing rather than a complete replacement on day one.

The $3,499 price establishes an intentionally high starting point

The largest immediate constraint is cost. Apple says Vision Pro will start at $3,499 when it reaches U.S. stores early next year, with other countries to follow later. That price places the first generation well above mainstream consumer headsets and signals that Apple is initially targeting developers, professionals, affluent early adopters and buyers willing to pay for a premium first-generation platform.

The company is also entering a market in which other technology firms have spent heavily without establishing headsets as everyday computing devices. Meta has built a substantial installed base for Quest products, Microsoft has pursued HoloLens in enterprise settings, and several companies have tried mixed-reality systems. Apple’s advantage is its integration of custom silicon, operating systems, application frameworks, retail stores and an established developer community. Its disadvantage is that the product still asks users to wear a relatively large device on their faces and accept a new interaction model.

A launch measured in years, not keynote applause

Vision Pro’s unveiling is therefore less a verdict on mixed reality than the beginning of a long test. Apple has shown a sophisticated device, but developers still need to create reasons to use it routinely, the company must manufacture it at acceptable quality and scale, and buyers must decide whether the experience justifies the price and the physical compromises of a headset.

What changed this week is that Apple formally entered the market with a platform-level commitment. The company has created new silicon, a new operating system and a new developer target rather than releasing a peripheral for an existing product. Whether “spatial computing” becomes a durable category will depend on adoption after Vision Pro reaches customers next year. For now, Apple has made one of its largest new-product bets since the introduction of the Apple Watch and has given the technology industry a concrete benchmark for what a premium mixed-reality computer can look like.
