United Airlines began daily nonstop service between Omaha’s Eppley Airfield and Newark Liberty International Airport on Thursday, restoring a direct link between Nebraska’s largest air market and one of the New York region’s principal aviation hubs. Eppley Airfield’s official site lists the Newark route as starting September 24, while United’s own booking site is selling travel between Newark and Omaha.
The route matters because it does more than add another way to reach New York City. Newark is a major United hub, so the daily flight gives Omaha travelers a new one-stop pathway to destinations beyond the Northeast, including international markets served from Newark. At the same time, it introduces a second New York-area airport option alongside existing Omaha service to LaGuardia. That distinction can be useful for travelers whose final destinations are in New Jersey, lower Manhattan or communities connected to Newark by rail and road.
The Omaha Airport Authority first announced the service in July. WOWT reported that United would operate the Newark flight daily beginning September 24, and KETV independently confirmed the same start date and frequency. The opening flight therefore represents the execution of a previously announced schedule, not a tentative future plan.
More Choice, but Not a Guarantee of Lower Fares
For passengers, the immediate gain is schedule and airport choice. Eppley’s official nonstop-destinations directory now lists Newark on United while also showing LaGuardia service on Delta and Southwest. The competition is not identical because the airports, schedules and airline networks differ, but travelers can now compare more itineraries for trips to the New York region.
That choice should not be read as a promise that fares will fall. Ticket prices change with demand, departure time, booking date and the availability of lower fare classes. Travelers comparing Newark and LaGuardia should also account for the cost and time of ground transportation, checked baggage, seat selection and possible connections. A less expensive ticket can become the costlier itinerary if it requires a long transfer or adds fees that another fare includes.
The Newark option is especially relevant for connecting passengers. United can sell a single itinerary from Omaha through Newark, with baggage checked to the final destination when the flights are on the same ticket and normal airline conditions are met. That can simplify travel compared with buying unrelated tickets on separate carriers, although customers should still allow adequate connection time and review terminal information before departure.
A Route Built Around a Hub
Newark Liberty describes itself as a gateway to New York City and destinations beyond. Its value to United’s network comes from concentrating arriving and departing flights at one airport, allowing passengers from a market such as Omaha to connect onward without first traveling through Chicago, Denver or another hub.
For Omaha, the added service expands the airport’s nonstop map rather than replacing its existing New York link. Grow Omaha reported when the route was announced that it would bring Eppley to 37 direct destinations and supplement LaGuardia flights already offered by Delta and Southwest. Eppley’s current directory now reflects Newark among its live destinations.
The two New York-area choices also serve different trip patterns. LaGuardia is often convenient for parts of Queens and Manhattan, while Newark can be more practical for New Jersey and for travelers connecting within United’s network. The better airport will depend on the passenger’s destination, ground-transport plan and total itinerary, not simply the straight-line distance from the city center.
The launch also provides a practical test of demand. Airlines routinely adjust aircraft size, frequency or seasonality as booking patterns develop. A route’s first day establishes service, but its longer-term durability depends on sustained passenger demand and operational performance. Neither the airport nor the airline has promised that every schedule detail will remain unchanged indefinitely.
What Travelers Should Check
Passengers using the new flight should verify departure times directly with United because airline schedules can change. Eppley advises departing passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure, allowing time for parking, check-in and security screening. Travelers connecting at Newark should also confirm their onward gate and allow for the size of the airport when evaluating an itinerary.
Weather and air-traffic constraints can affect any Northeast flight, and Newark has experienced periods of congestion. That makes same-day flight-status checks important, particularly for passengers with international connections or fixed appointments. Booking all segments on one reservation generally gives the operating airline clearer responsibility for reaccommodation if a delay causes a missed connection, though the exact remedy depends on the circumstances and fare rules.
The central development is straightforward: daily Omaha–Newark service is now operating after a two-month lead time between announcement and launch. For Nebraska travelers, it adds a second New York-area airport and a new United hub option. For the airline and airport, the coming months will show whether the route attracts enough local and connecting traffic to remain a durable part of Eppley’s network.
