Toy Story 5 began streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday after earning roughly $1.15 billion worldwide, moving Pixar’s biggest film of 2026 from theaters into Disney’s subscription library 96 days after its U.S. theatrical opening.

The Sept. 23 debut was confirmed by Disney+ and highlighted by the Associated Press among the week’s major home-entertainment releases. The timing puts a high-value family title on Disney+ as the fall television season begins, while preserving a theatrical window long enough for the movie to become one of the year’s defining box-office successes.

The transition also shows how Disney can extract value from a franchise across several release stages. The film opened in U.S. theaters on June 19, moved to digital purchase and rental on Aug. 18, reached 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on Sept. 22, and arrived on Disney+ one day later. Each step targets a different audience: moviegoers, buyers willing to pay for early home access, physical-media collectors and, finally, subscribers.

A billion-dollar theatrical foundation

The streaming launch follows a commercial run that substantially exceeded the threshold normally used to define a global blockbuster. Box Office Mojo lists $480.3 million in North America and $665.8 million internationally, for $1.146 billion worldwide. The Numbers reports the same domestic total and a slightly lower international figure, putting the worldwide tally at $1.145 billion. The small difference reflects routine variation in international reporting rather than a dispute over the scale of the result.

The film opened to $159.7 million domestically from 4,425 theaters, according to both trackers, then finished with about three times its opening weekend in North America. That pattern matters because it indicates the movie was not merely a front-loaded franchise event. Families continued buying tickets after the initial rush, giving Disney time to monetize the film in cinemas before making it part of a subscription product.

Disney did not disclose a streaming-viewership target for the release. The box-office total therefore establishes the size of the theatrical audience but does not predict how many Disney+ households will watch the movie, how many new subscriptions it may generate or whether it will reduce cancellations. Those questions require platform data that were not available at launch.

A carefully staged home release

The 96-day span from the U.S. theatrical opening to Disney+ is considerably longer than the compressed windows studios sometimes used during and immediately after the pandemic. It also separates subscription access from the Aug. 18 premium home release by more than five weeks. Variety reported when Disney announced the streaming date that the film would first remain available for digital purchase and then reach disc on Sept. 22.

That sequencing protects several revenue channels without requiring Disney to choose permanently between theaters and streaming. A family that paid for a cinema outing or digital copy may still keep Disney+ for repeat viewing, while subscribers who waited gain access as part of their existing plan. The film also joins the first four Toy Story movies, specials and shorts in a single franchise collection, allowing Disney to use the new installment to renew attention across a catalog built over three decades.

The arrangement should not be mistaken for evidence that one release window fits every film. A billion-dollar animated sequel can support a long theatrical run in a way that a smaller title may not. Disney’s choice reflects the demonstrated demand for this specific movie and the unusually durable value of a family franchise, not a universal timetable for the company’s releases.

Pixar’s franchise remains the draw

The film’s official Pixar page centers the returning relationship between Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie while introducing a technology-driven threat to traditional play. Andrew Stanton directed, with Kenna Harris as co-director, and Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack returned as the principal toy characters. Greta Lee voices Lilypad, a tablet that competes for Bonnie’s attention.

That premise makes the home-streaming release unusually self-referential: viewers are watching a story about toys competing with screens on a screen. Disney’s marketing leans into that tension, describing the movie as “Toy meets Tech,” but the commercial lesson is more straightforward. Familiar characters and a clear generational conflict gave audiences an easy reason to return even after four previous features.

The result also demonstrates the continuing value of established animation brands at a time when theatrical attendance is less predictable than it was before 2020. Yet box-office success alone does not establish that audiences want unlimited sequels. It shows that this installment, released with a recognizable cast and a broad family premise, attracted sustained global demand.

The next test moves inside Disney+

The immediate benchmark will be whether Toy Story 5 becomes a durable streaming title rather than a short-lived premiere spike. Disney can promote the film alongside the earlier movies, a retrospective special and related shorts, making the franchise more useful as a retention tool than a stand-alone release would be. The company can also continue earning from digital sales and physical copies even after subscription access begins.

Independent audience measurements will eventually offer some indication of U.S. viewing, but they will not fully reveal subscriber acquisition, international engagement or profitability. Disney’s internal data would be needed to answer those questions. For now, the evidence is clearest on the theatrical side: the film generated about $1.15 billion before entering Disney+, and Disney waited more than three months after its domestic opening to make that transition.

That makes Wednesday’s release less an abandonment of theaters than the final stage of a deliberately layered distribution plan. Toy Story 5 has already proved its drawing power at the box office. Its Disney+ run will test how effectively the same hit can deepen the value of a streaming catalog after the highest-priced windows have largely run their course.
