Apple Vision Pro went on sale in the United States Friday at a starting price of $3,499, beginning the commercial test of the company’s most ambitious new hardware platform since the Apple Watch. Apple describes the headset as a “spatial computer” rather than a virtual-reality device, combining high-resolution displays, eye and hand tracking, cameras, sensors and familiar applications in an interface that places digital windows throughout a user’s physical surroundings.
The device is launching with more than 600 applications and games designed specifically for Vision Pro, according to Apple’s February 1 app announcement, while more than one million existing iPhone and iPad applications can run in compatibility mode. That gives Apple an unusually large software catalog for a first-generation computing platform, but the headset’s price, weight and limited battery life make its initial audience likely to be enthusiasts, developers and professionals rather than the mass market.
A $3,499 bet on a new interface
Apple first set the launch date and pricing in a January 8 release. The base model includes 256 gigabytes of storage, with higher-capacity versions available at higher prices. Vision Pro is controlled primarily with a user’s eyes, hands and voice: users look at an interface element, pinch their fingers to select it and use gestures to scroll or move windows. Unlike many competing headsets, Apple does not rely on handheld motion controllers for the core interface.
Inside the device, an Apple M2 processor runs applications while a dedicated R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones. Apple says the two micro-OLED displays provide 23 million pixels, more than a 4K television for each eye. External cameras pass a view of the physical room into the headset, enabling applications to appear anchored in real space while a Digital Crown allows the user to increase or reduce immersion.
Vision Pro’s arrival at U.S. Apple Stores is being accompanied by in-store demonstrations, an unusual necessity for a product whose fit and visual calibration vary by user. Prescription optical inserts from Zeiss are sold separately, and buyers must select a Light Seal and head-band configuration intended to match their face.
Entertainment is the most immediate showcase
Apple has emphasized immersive video and entertainment as some of the easiest ways to demonstrate why the hardware is different from a laptop or tablet. In a January preview, the company said more than 150 movies would be available in 3D through the Apple TV app, along with Apple Immersive Video titles recorded in 8K 3D with a 180-degree field of view and Spatial Audio.
Streaming services including Disney+ and Max have built native experiences, while other major services can operate through browsers or compatible iPad applications. The platform can display a virtual screen that appears dramatically larger than a physical television, but Apple is also trying to distinguish Vision Pro from a simple personal theater by showing productivity applications, collaboration tools and three-dimensional content.
The software launch lineup spans Microsoft 365, Zoom, Webex, productivity tools, design applications and games. Apple’s count of more than 600 native apps is important because early computing platforms often struggle with a chicken-and-egg problem: developers hesitate to invest without users, while consumers hesitate to buy without software. Apple is attempting to overcome that by making it comparatively easy for existing iPad applications to run on visionOS.
Early reviews praise displays but flag comfort and isolation
Early reviewers have broadly described Vision Pro’s displays and eye-tracking system as technically impressive while questioning whether the device is comfortable enough for long sessions. A Washington Post review roundup highlighted the tension between the headset’s unusually polished interface and the physical realities of wearing a substantial computer on the face.
The front glass, aluminum frame, cameras and displays contribute to a weight of roughly 600 to 650 grams depending on the configuration, not including the external battery. The battery is connected by a cable and provides roughly two to two and a half hours of general use, according to Apple. Those constraints matter if the company ultimately wants users to work for extended periods inside visionOS.
Launch-day coverage from MacRumors showed lines and appointment-driven demos at Apple Stores as the first preorders reached customers. Engadget’s launch coverage emphasized the unusually high entry price relative to Meta’s Quest headsets and other consumer virtual-reality products.
The strategic question is larger than headset sales
Apple’s long-term wager is that spatial computing can become an interface category in the same way graphical personal computers, smartphones and tablets did. Vision Pro is not priced or packaged to produce iPhone-scale sales immediately. Instead, it gives developers and consumers a first look at Apple’s approach to mixing digital information with the physical environment.
That makes the launch a platform test as much as a hardware launch. The company has built visionOS around familiar concepts such as windows, apps, FaceTime and the App Store, while replacing the mouse, trackpad and touchscreen with eye tracking and hand gestures. If developers discover compelling uses for that interface in work, entertainment, medicine, design or communication, later generations could reach a wider market as components become cheaper and lighter.
The risks are equally clear. A $3,499 starting price places Vision Pro far outside the normal consumer electronics impulse-buy range. Social norms around wearing a headset in shared spaces remain unsettled. The device isolates the eyes behind a display, even though Apple’s EyeSight feature attempts to show an approximation of the wearer’s eyes on the exterior screen. And many tasks remain faster or more comfortable on conventional devices.
For now, Apple has delivered a technically sophisticated first generation with a substantial software base on day one. Whether Vision Pro becomes the foundation of another major Apple platform will depend less on the launch-week spectacle than on what developers build, how often owners choose to wear it and whether future versions can reduce the cost and physical burden without losing the capabilities that make the product distinctive.
