California’s major theme parks have entered the heart of their 2026 Halloween calendars, giving visitors several distinct options through October 31: family-oriented seasonal programming at Disneyland Resort, separately ticketed horror events at Universal Studios Hollywood and Knott’s Berry Farm, and a daytime children’s event beginning later this week at Knott’s.
Four calendars now overlap
Disneyland Resort’s Halloween Time runs from August 21 through October 31. The resort describes the program as a family-friendly seasonal celebration across Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, with themed décor, entertainment, characters, food and merchandise. Standard park admission and a reservation are required for the in-park offerings, while Oogie Boogie Bash is a separate-ticket event.
Disney California Adventure’s Plaza de la Familia extends beyond Halloween through November 2. Disney’s official announcement identifies the celebration as a Día de los Muertos-inspired program built around family remembrance, décor and entertainment. That longer window gives travelers arriving immediately after October 31 one remaining seasonal option, although they should verify the operating calendar before purchasing admission.
Universal Studios Hollywood’s Horror Nights operates on select nights from September 3 through November 1. It is separately ticketed and is positioned for an older audience seeking haunted houses, scare zones, the Terror Tram and selected attractions. Because the event does not run every night, a regular daytime ticket should not be assumed to include evening admission.
Knott’s Scary Farm began September 17 and continues on select nights through October 31. The Buena Park event is also an evening horror product, distinct from Knott’s ordinary daytime operation. Families seeking a non-horror option at the same resort can instead consider Spooky Farm, which begins September 24 and runs on selected days through October 31 with daytime activities, trick-or-treating and entertainment.
The ticket distinction matters
The central planning issue is not simply which park to choose, but which admission product covers the intended experience. Disneyland’s general Halloween atmosphere is included with valid park admission and a reservation, but Oogie Boogie Bash requires its own ticket. Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and Knott’s Scary Farm are separately ticketed nighttime events. Knott’s Spooky Farm is the family-oriented daytime alternative, but visitors should still consult the dated operating calendar.
Travelers should avoid treating “Halloween event” as a single interchangeable category. Daytime programs generally emphasize décor, seasonal food and family entertainment. Nighttime horror events use theatrical fog, loud audio, scare actors and intense imagery that may not be suitable for every guest. Accessibility needs, age considerations and tolerance for darkness or sudden effects should be reviewed before purchase.
How to choose a 2026 visit
Visitors prioritizing broad family participation have the longest continuous window at Disneyland Resort, where Halloween Time runs daily within the published season, subject to the parks’ reservation and operating systems. Families visiting Knott’s after September 24 gain another daytime option through Spooky Farm. Adults and older teens seeking a horror-first evening can compare the dated calendars at Universal and Knott’s rather than relying on a general travel itinerary.
Location also changes the practical choice. Disneyland Resort and Knott’s Berry Farm are both in Orange County, making them easier to combine in one lodging plan than Universal Studios Hollywood, which sits in Los Angeles County. Attempting a daytime park and a separately ticketed night event on the same date can produce a long day and additional transportation costs, especially when evening admission begins before ordinary park closing routines are complete.
Before departure, visitors should recheck the official event page, park hours, ticket terms and reservation requirements. Dates and availability can change, and popular separately ticketed nights can sell out. The strongest plan is to select the event first, confirm the exact date is operating, and only then finalize lodging and transportation.
