# Meta Unveils $1,499 Quest Pro With Full-Color Mixed Reality, Eye Tracking and Microsoft Work Tools

Meta has introduced the **$1,499.99 Quest Pro**, its most expensive virtual-reality headset and the company’s clearest attempt yet to turn immersive computing into a platform for professional work as well as games. The company’s [Meta Connect announcement](https://about.fb.com/news/2022/10/meta-quest-pro-social-vr-connect-2022/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) says the device will ship October 25 with full-color mixed-reality passthrough, eye and face tracking, redesigned controllers and a slimmer optical system than the mainstream Quest 2.

The product arrives as Meta is spending heavily to build what Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg calls the metaverse. Quest Pro is not positioned as a mass-market replacement for the lower-priced Quest 2\. Instead, it is a premium device aimed at developers, designers, collaborative teams and early adopters who are willing to pay notebook-computer prices for a headset that blends physical and digital environments.

## A more powerful platform built around mixed reality

Quest Pro uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 platform. Qualcomm’s [chip announcement](https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2022/10/snapdragon-xr2--transforms-vr-experiences-on--meta-quest-pro?ref=theamericanquorum.com) says the new processor supports 50% higher sustained power and improved thermal performance compared with the earlier XR2 platform. The headset pairs that silicon with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and an array of sensors intended to track both the wearer and the surrounding room.

The hardware is designed around a concept Meta calls mixed reality. Instead of sealing users off from their surroundings, external cameras provide a color view of the physical environment while virtual windows, models and interfaces are layered into the scene. The approach is meant to support use cases such as reviewing a three-dimensional product design on a real desk, joining a virtual meeting while retaining awareness of the room, or placing multiple software screens around a physical workspace.

Those changes seek to reduce bulk while improving interaction precision.

## Eye and face tracking make avatars more expressive

Two of the most consequential additions are eye tracking and inward-facing cameras that can detect facial expressions. Meta says these systems allow avatars to reproduce gaze and expressions more naturally, potentially making virtual meetings feel less static than today’s simplified headset avatars.

The same sensors may also support more efficient rendering by directing computational resources toward the part of the display the user is looking at. But they introduce new privacy questions because eye movements and facial expressions can reveal information that ordinary mouse-and-keyboard systems never collect. Meta will need to persuade enterprise customers that those data are handled in ways compatible with workplace security and privacy requirements.

## Microsoft brings Teams and Windows into Meta’s headset strategy

Meta is trying to make Quest Pro useful before a large native productivity ecosystem exists. A new [Microsoft partnership](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2022/10/11/microsoft-and-meta-partner-to-deliver-immersive-experiences-for-the-future-of-work-and-play/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) will bring Mesh for Microsoft Teams to Meta Quest devices and make Microsoft 365 applications available through immersive work experiences. Windows 365 is also expected to let users stream a cloud PC into the headset.

The companies are additionally working to make Meta Quest devices manageable through Microsoft Intune and Azure Active Directory, a practical requirement for enterprises that need identity, device and security controls. ## A high-priced test of Meta’s computing thesis

Quest Pro is important less because of the number of units it is likely to sell immediately than because it reveals the technical direction Meta believes personal computing will take. The company is combining spatial interfaces, body signals, cloud applications and persistent avatars in an effort to move work beyond rectangular monitors.

The economic challenge is substantial. Most offices already have mature collaboration tools that run on inexpensive laptops and phones. For a $1,499 headset to become more than a specialist device, it must create enough productivity or creative value to justify additional hardware, training and management costs. Developers must also build applications that take advantage of depth, hand interaction and mixed reality rather than simply recreating flat screens in three dimensions.

Meta is effectively asking the market to judge a future platform before the platform is mature. Quest Pro provides better optics, more sensing and deeper enterprise partnerships than the company’s earlier consumer headsets. Whether those improvements are enough to turn immersive computing from an entertainment category into a regular workplace tool will be the central test after shipments begin later this month.
