# Apple’s M2 Packs 20 Billion Transistors as Redesigned MacBook Air Opens Second Generation of Apple Silicon

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple used its Worldwide Developers Conference this week to open the second generation of its in-house Mac processors, introducing the M2 chip with 20 billion transistors and pairing it with a completely redesigned MacBook Air that starts at $1,199.

The M2 is built with enhanced second-generation 5-nanometer technology and contains 25% more transistors than the original M1\. Apple said its [new system on a chip](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2022/06/apple-unveils-m2-with-breakthrough-performance-and-capabilities/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) delivers an 18% faster CPU, up to 35% higher GPU performance at maximum power and a 40% faster Neural Engine than M1, while increasing unified-memory bandwidth by 50% to 100 GB per second.

## M2 extends the architecture rather than replacing the M1 family outright

Apple’s first M1 chip arrived in late 2020 as the company began replacing Intel processors across the Mac lineup. Since then, Apple has expanded the architecture with higher-end M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra variants. M2 does not displace those performance-oriented chips; it begins a new base generation aimed first at the company’s two most mainstream notebooks.

The chip retains an eight-core CPU while increasing the graphics configuration to as many as 10 cores. It supports up to 24 GB of unified memory, compared with 16 GB on the original M1, and includes updated media engines with hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC and ProRes video. Apple says the Neural Engine can process 15.8 trillion operations per second.

A contemporaneous [TechCrunch account](https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/06/apple-announces-the-m2/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) noted that Apple is again emphasizing performance per watt rather than simply peak processing speed. That strategy is central to the Mac transition because the same processor architecture must deliver competitive performance while preserving the battery life and thermal characteristics expected from thin notebooks.

## The MacBook Air receives its most visible redesign in years

The first showcase for M2 is a MacBook Air that abandons the tapered wedge shape associated with the line for more than a decade. Apple’s [MacBook Air announcement](https://www.apple.com/es/newsroom/2022/06/apple-unveils-all-new-macbook-air-supercharged-by-the-new-m2-chip/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) describes an 11.3-millimeter-thick chassis weighing 2.7 pounds, a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, a 1080p FaceTime camera and the return of MagSafe charging.

The new Air is fanless and rated by Apple for up to 18 hours of video playback. It includes two Thunderbolt ports, a headphone jack, a four-speaker audio system and four finishes. Apple also introduced an optional compact power adapter with two USB-C ports and said the Air can reach as much as 50% charge in 30 minutes when used with a compatible 67-watt adapter.

The price rises from the $999 entry point that helped make the M1 Air a mass-market product. The M2 version starts at $1,199 in the United States, while Apple is keeping the M1 model in the lineup at $999\. That two-tier structure gives Apple a lower-cost entry product while creating room to charge a premium for the new design and processor.

TechCrunch’s [June 6 report](https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/06/apple-2022-macbook-air/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) highlighted the larger display, 1080p camera, MagSafe and flat-sided design and noted that Apple expects the new model to ship the following month.

## The 13-inch MacBook Pro also gets M2, but keeps its existing design

Apple is also placing M2 in the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which retains the familiar chassis and Touch Bar. The updated model starts at $1,299 and can be configured with as much as 24 GB of unified memory and 2 TB of solid-state storage. Apple rates it for up to 20 hours of video playback.

The decision creates an unusual product split: the less expensive new MacBook Air receives the more substantial industrial redesign, while the 13-inch Pro primarily changes internally. A [contemporaneous review of the announcement](https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/06/apple-macbook-pro-13-inch-with-m2/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) noted that the Pro keeps an eight-core CPU and 10-core GPU configuration with the new chip and adds the higher memory ceiling.

That arrangement suggests Apple is using M2 first to refresh volume products while reserving any higher-performance second-generation variants for later. The company has not announced an M2 Pro, M2 Max or M2 Ultra, and no such products should be assumed from this week’s disclosures.

## WWDC ties the hardware transition to a broader software strategy

The M2 announcement was only one piece of a developer conference that also previewed major operating-system releases. On the iPad, [iPadOS 16](https://www.apple.com/uk/newsroom/2022/06/ipados-16-takes-the-versatility-of-ipad-even-further/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) brings Stage Manager and, on supported models, overlapping windows and external-display support. Those changes are particularly significant for M1-equipped iPads because they extend Apple’s desktop-class multitasking concepts to a tablet platform built on the same underlying silicon architecture.

Apple also previewed [watchOS 9](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2022/06/watchos-9-delivers-new-ways-to-stay-connected-active-and-healthy/?ref=theamericanquorum.com), including expanded workout metrics, sleep stages, medication tracking and an FDA-cleared AFib History feature. The breadth of the software announcements shows that WWDC remains primarily a platform event even when new Mac hardware takes center stage.

## The second generation will be judged on efficiency and product breadth

M1 changed the economics and engineering of the Mac by giving Apple control over the processor architecture, memory system and operating-system optimization. M2 is the first test of whether that initial transition can become a repeatable cadence rather than a one-time leap.

The headline figures — 20 billion transistors, 100 GB/s of memory bandwidth and up to 24 GB of unified memory — show a chip that adds capacity without abandoning the power-efficiency focus of M1\. But Apple’s performance comparisons are company-supplied claims, and independent testing will be needed once systems reach customers.

For now, the most consequential announcement may be the combination rather than any single benchmark: a second-generation Apple processor, a newly designed MacBook Air and software increasingly optimized around common Apple silicon. The company has completed much of its break from Intel. The next phase is proving that it can keep advancing its own platform across successive generations while maintaining the battery life, thermal efficiency and software compatibility that made the first transition credible.
