West Virginia’s tourism economy generated an estimated record $9.4 billion in economic impact in 2025, according to a new state-commissioned analysis released Monday. The total includes $6.8 billion in direct visitor spending, or about $18.7 million a day.

The governor’s [announcement](https://governor.wv.gov/article/west-virginia-tourism-economy-reaches-historic-milestone-soars-record-94-billion-economic?ref=theamericanquorum.com) said 78.4 million people visited the state last year, an increase of 1.6%, while overnight visitation grew by nearly 2%. The study estimated that tourism supported 61,728 jobs, generated $2.3 billion in personal income and produced $643 million in state and local taxes.

The distinction between direct spending and total economic impact is important. The $6.8 billion figure measures what travelers spent, while the larger $9.4 billion estimate also accounts for indirect and induced activity tied to that spending. The state has not yet posted the underlying 2025 study on its [research page](https://wvtourism.com/information-and-press/tourism-partners/industry-resources/research-reports/?ref=theamericanquorum.com), so the detailed modeling assumptions are not currently available there for public review.

Even so, the new totals extend a documented run of growth. West Virginia’s [2024 results](https://wvtourism.com/release/west-virginia-tourism-tops-9-billion-in-annual-economic-impact-for-first-time-in-states-history/amp/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) placed economic impact at $9.1 billion, direct visitor spending at $6.6 billion and visitation at 77.2 million. The state then attributed about 61,000 jobs and $619 million in state and local tax revenue to tourism.

The 2025 estimate therefore represents about a 3.3% increase in overall impact and roughly a 3% gain in direct spending. State officials also calculated that tourism-generated tax revenue reduced the average household tax burden by $882\. That figure is a modeled fiscal offset, not a direct payment to households.

The job estimate is broad: it includes employment directly serving visitors as well as positions supported through suppliers and worker spending. On the state’s numbers, tourism accounts for roughly one of every 15 West Virginia jobs overall. The $643 million tax estimate is about $24 million above the prior year’s figure.

The release paired the record with several planned tourism investments. Twin Falls Resort State Park is receiving $1.8 million for cabin and heating-and-cooling upgrades, plus $475,000 for interior improvements. A private operator plans 32 glamping sites across four state parks for spring 2027\. Cass Scenic Railroad is adding a 100-site campground, and a replacement aerial tram at Hawks Nest State Park is scheduled to open next spring.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s [report](https://wvpublic.org/story/arts-culture/tourism-economy-brings-visitors-money-to-w-va/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) emphasized both the visitor growth and the projects announced alongside the study. [Regional coverage](https://www.wvnews.com/news/wvnews/west-virginia-tourism-economy-reaches-record-9-4-billion-economic-impact/article%5F492d5d0e-38e9-4a6b-83aa-691a7a80fd57.html?ref=theamericanquorum.com) likewise highlighted the role of state parks and outdoor recreation in the administration’s tourism strategy.

The figures offer evidence that travel remains a significant statewide industry, but the unpublished methodology limits independent evaluation of the full $9.4 billion estimate. The clearest year-over-year measure is direct spending: travelers spent about $200 million more in West Virginia in 2025 than in 2024, according to the state’s commissioned studies.
