Vermont is accepting applications for a $508,000 round of Working Lands Business Enhancement Grants, offering eligible farm, forest and food businesses $10,000–$50,000 for development projects. The [agency announcement](https://agriculture.vermont.gov/agency-agriculture-food-markets-news/working-lands-enterprise-initiative-opens-business-1?ref=theamericanquorum.com) sets a December 10, 2026, deadline at 2 p.m. and says no matching funds are required. Applications opened October 9, with decisions expected in late February or early March 2027.

The round supports projects such as equipment, infrastructure, market development, research and workforce training. It is business-development funding: applicants must propose a specific project and provide financial information, rather than assume that operating in agriculture or forestry automatically qualifies them for an award. Those requirements are outlined in the [published grant guidance](https://workinglands.vermont.gov/grant-contract-opportunities/business-enhancement-grant?ref=theamericanquorum.com).

## No required match does not mean no other costs

The program’s no-match rule removes a requirement to contribute a fixed share alongside the grant. But the [agency’s terms](https://workinglands.vermont.gov/grant-contract-opportunities/business-enhancement-grant?ref=theamericanquorum.com) say applicants proposing a project that costs more than their requested award must demonstrate how they will pay the uncovered portion. The same guidance recommends asking for the minimum needed for a project because available funds are limited.

Applicants also need to check the business and product rules. The grant is intended for qualifying enterprises with at least one year of operating history. The [program’s frequently asked questions](https://workinglands.vermont.gov/grant-contract-opportunities/faq?ref=theamericanquorum.com) explain that eligible organizational forms include sole proprietorships, cooperatives, companies and nonprofits, subject to applicable registration requirements. Legal structure alone does not establish project eligibility.

The FAQ says the business-focused grant prioritizes working-landscape enterprises producing food, fiber and forest or wood products. Its farm examples include maple production, hay, vegetables, livestock and other qualifying products. For applicants near the boundaries of those categories, the [agency directs eligibility questions to program staff](https://workinglands.vermont.gov/grant-contract-opportunities/faq?ref=theamericanquorum.com); the list should not be read as blanket approval for every business connected to rural tourism or land ownership.

## A competitive funding pool

Earlier agency records illustrate why eligibility and funding are separate questions. In its [February 2026 budget presentation](https://legislature.vermont.gov/Documents/2026/Workgroups/Senate%20Appropriations/FY%202027%20Budget/Protection%20to%20Persons%20and%20Property/W~Anson%20Tebbetts~AAFM%20FY%2027%20Budget%20Presentation~2-13-2026.pdf?ref=theamericanquorum.com), the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets reported 115 eligible Business Enhancement applications seeking $4.27 million against $620,000 available for fiscal 2026\. Those historical figures do not predict any individual applicant’s chances in the new round, but they show demand exceeding available funding.

The same presentation reported Working Lands investments across all 14 counties over the program’s history. That statewide reach helps explain the grant’s role beyond any one farm or mill: its [stated economic-development objective](https://legislature.vermont.gov/Documents/2026/Workgroups/Senate%20Appropriations/FY%202027%20Budget/Protection%20to%20Persons%20and%20Property/W~Anson%20Tebbetts~AAFM%20FY%2027%20Budget%20Presentation~2-13-2026.pdf?ref=theamericanquorum.com) is to support entrepreneurship and increase the value of agricultural and forest products.

For this round, applicants should review the full application requirements before committing spending. The [program page](https://workinglands.vermont.gov/grant-contract-opportunities/business-enhancement-grant?ref=theamericanquorum.com) says WebGrants registration can take two business days and identifies April 2027 as the estimated project start. It also lists planning assistance through the Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program on a first-come basis.

Eligibility and timing details here follow the agency’s authoritative program guidance, not a determination about any particular business. Questions about a proposed applicant or expense should be checked against the [current FAQ](https://workinglands.vermont.gov/grant-contract-opportunities/faq?ref=theamericanquorum.com) and confirmed with the program before submission.
