# Utah Keeps 2 State Prisons Locked Down After Officer Assault

Utah’s two state prison campuses remained under lockdown Saturday while the Department of Corrections investigated an assault that hospitalized an officer at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. The department’s [current public notice](https://corrections.utah.gov/all-prisons-on-lockdown-during-staff-assault-investigation/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) says both the Gunnison prison and the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City will stay locked down until the investigation is complete.

An incarcerated person assaulted the officer inside a Gunnison housing unit on Thursday, September 24\. The officer was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and was reported in stable condition. ## Restrictions extend statewide

The operational response extends beyond the site of the assault. Visiting and volunteer work are suspended at both prisons, according to the department. That affects two large facilities: the [Central Utah facility can house up to 1,800 men](https://corrections.utah.gov/about-us/correctional-facilties/central-utah-correctional-facility/?ref=theamericanquorum.com), while the [Salt Lake City prison has 3,600 beds](https://corrections.utah.gov/about-us/correctional-facilties/utah-state-correctional-facility/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) across units serving men and women with different security and medical needs.

For families, the immediate consequence is that in-person contact cannot resume on the ordinary schedule until Corrections changes the lockdown status. Commissioner Jared Garcia said officers and staff responded quickly and expressed confidence that the injured officer would recover. The department also deployed peer-support and mobile-crisis teams for employees. Those statements describe the agency’s response; they do not resolve why the attack occurred or whether staffing, supervision or facility conditions contributed.

## Questions for the review

The September incident follows a separate July attack at the Salt Lake City prison. The two events should not be treated as connected without evidence, but the earlier response shows that Utah can ease a lockdown in stages rather than reopening every unit at once.

The current investigation now has several practical questions to answer: whether procedures were followed in the housing unit, whether staffing and response times were adequate, and what conditions must be met before visits and volunteer programs restart. Corrections has not announced a reopening timetable or said when it will provide another update.

Until then, the clearest verified picture is limited: one officer was injured and is stable, both state prisons are operating under restrictions, support teams are assisting staff, and the department is withholding further details during an active investigation. Any broader conclusion about responsibility or systemic cause would be premature.
