Rhode Islanders who need to register or update their voter records have until Sunday, Oct. 4, to participate fully in the Nov. 3 general election. Secretary of State Gregg Amore and the Elections Division [issued the reminder](https://www.sos.ri.gov/article?articleno=51498&ref=theamericanquorum.com) as the state enters a sequence of deadlines for registration, mail ballots and early in-person voting.

Registration can be completed online through the state voter portal or by delivering a paper form to a local board of canvassers. Because the deadline falls on a Sunday, municipalities have designated drop-off locations or special hours for forms. Voters using the mail should ensure that registration documents are postmarked by Oct. 4; local procedures and addresses vary by city and town.

The cutoff applies both to new registrations and changes that affect a voter’s record, such as an updated address. [Rhode Island Current reported](https://rhodeislandcurrent.com/2026/09/30/voter-registration-deadline-is-sunday-oct-4/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) that more than 695,000 eligible voters were registered as of September, citing the Department of State’s online database. Residents can use vote.ri.gov to check whether their information is current before submitting a duplicate application.

Registration is only the first deadline. The [Board of Elections calendar](https://elections.ri.gov/elections/upcoming-elections?ref=theamericanquorum.com) lists 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, as the deadline to request a mail ballot. The state’s [mail-ballot page](https://elections.ri.gov/voter-resources/mail-ballot?ref=theamericanquorum.com) provides the application and explains options for military, overseas and other qualified voters. Applying early leaves more time to receive, complete and return the ballot before polls close on Election Day.

Early in-person voting begins Wednesday, Oct. 14, and runs through 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2\. Under the Board of Elections’ [early-voting guidance](https://elections.ri.gov/voter-resources/person-early-voting-emergency-mail-ballots?ref=theamericanquorum.com), registered voters may vote at the location designated by their city or town during the 20 days preceding Election Day. The emergency mail-ballot period covers the same window for eligible voters who need a ballot after the regular request deadline.

Voters who receive a mail ballot should follow the envelope instructions and return it to an authorized election office or drop box by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3\. A voter cannot exchange an issued mail ballot for an early in-person ballot, making it important to choose the method that best fits the voter’s circumstances.

Municipal boards of canvassers also maintain local polling-place and early-voting information. Hours are not uniform statewide, so voters planning an in-person visit should confirm the location and schedule with their own city or town rather than relying on another municipality’s notice. The state portal also provides registration-status and polling-place lookups.

The practical sequence is therefore Oct. 4 for registration, Oct. 13 for a standard mail-ballot request, Oct. 14 for the start of early voting and Nov. 3 for Election Day. Checking a record now gives election officials time to resolve errors before voting begins and reduces the risk that a missed administrative deadline limits a voter’s available options.
