North Carolina’s early voting period is drawing heavier participation than the comparable opening stretch of the last midterm election, while eligible residents still have time to register and vote together. An October 19 review of the State Board of Elections’ [aggregate file](https://s3.amazonaws.com/dl.ncsbe.gov/ENRS/2026%5F11%5F03/absentee%5Fcounts%5Fstate%5F20261103.csv?ref=theamericanquorum.com) finds 525,970 recorded ballots, including 485,531 categorized as early voting. These are participation records, not candidate results.

[Axios reported](https://www.axios.com/local/charlotte/2026/10/19/north-carolina-early-voting-2026-democrats-gop?ref=theamericanquorum.com) October 19 that participation through October 18 was 37% above the comparable 2022 midterm point. An earlier [WRAL report](https://www.wral.com/news/local/early-voting-numbers-up-north-carolina-days-early-voting-period-october-2026/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) documented the increase after the first two voting days, citing 398,581 in-person early votes by Friday, October 16, and 437,217 ballots when mail voting was included. The snapshots cover different dates and should not be treated as competing final totals.

## What the numbers measure

The [State Board](https://www.ncsbe.gov/results-data/absentee-and-provisional-data?ref=theamericanquorum.com) publishes separate files for individual ballot records and aggregate counts grouped by voting method and voter demographics. Its documentation says in-person early voting data are added the day after ballots are cast. That reporting lag matters when comparing a daily file with news accounts or activity at polling places later in the day.

The October 19 [file totals](https://s3.amazonaws.com/dl.ncsbe.gov/ENRS/2026%5F11%5F03/absentee%5Fcounts%5Fstate%5F20261103.csv?ref=theamericanquorum.com) also include 33,608 civilian absentee ballots, 858 military ballots and 5,973 overseas ballots. Adding the categories produces the 525,970 total. Party fields describe the registration of participating voters, not their choices on a secret ballot. The dataset does not supply candidate vote totals, so it cannot establish who is winning.

State Board spokesman Jason Tyson told [WRAL](https://www.wral.com/news/local/early-voting-numbers-up-north-carolina-days-early-voting-period-october-2026/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) that the early response had surprised his office. He cited advertising, attention to important races, new registrations and population growth as possible contributors. Those explanations are officials’ assessments, rather than a measured finding that any single issue caused the increase. He also described preparations involving poll workers and backup tabulators.

## Registration window remains open

The board’s [voter guidance](https://www.ncsbe.gov/news/press-releases/2026/10/09/10-things-person-early-voters-know-north-carolina?ref=theamericanquorum.com) lists 370 early voting sites statewide and sets the closing deadline at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 31\. Eligible voters can use any early voting location within their county. County schedules vary, so the board directs residents to its site-search tool for locations and operating hours rather than assuming every site follows the same weekend schedule.

Residents who missed the regular registration deadline can use [same-day registration](https://www.ncsbe.gov/registering/how-register/register-person-during-early-voting?ref=theamericanquorum.com) during early voting. They must meet eligibility requirements, attest to their eligibility and provide proof of residence. The board lists documents including a current utility bill, bank statement or government document showing the voter’s name and address. Voters will also be asked for acceptable photo identification.

The [board’s instructions](https://www.ncsbe.gov/news/press-releases/2026/10/09/10-things-person-early-voters-know-north-carolina?ref=theamericanquorum.com) explain options for people unable to present photo ID, including a provisional ballot and Photo ID Exception Form. Election Day is November 3\. The board’s [voting rules](https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/vote-early-person?ref=theamericanquorum.com) distinguish early voting’s same-day registration option from Election Day, when it is unavailable for most voters. The immediate statewide development is increased participation, not a forecast of the eventual result.
