# North Carolina Commits $14.4 Million to WTA Finals

North Carolina is committing $14.4 million in state money to bring the Women’s Tennis Association Finals to Charlotte for three years, the largest announced award yet from a fund financed by legalized sports wagering.

Gov. Josh Stein said the [state grant](https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases/2026/09/16/governor-stein-announces-womens-tennis-association-moving-charlotte?ref=theamericanquorum.com) will support the season-ending championship at Spectrum Center in 2027, 2028 and 2029\. The first Charlotte tournament is scheduled for Nov. 10-14, 2027, featuring the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams. The state projects 80,000 spectators, with practices, fan activities and meeting space planned at the Charlotte Convention Center.

The award comes from the Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund, known as MEGA. The funding structure was created alongside North Carolina’s sports-betting framework. The state’s $14.4 million is an incentive, not an unrestricted subsidy. The longer-term test is whether visitors, employment and private investment justify the public commitment. State officials estimate the annual Finals could generate tens of millions of dollars for the region, but the grant’s ultimate value will depend on verified spending, attendance and the durability of the WTA’s Charlotte operations. Those results should be measurable after the first tournament concludes.
