# Nebraska Moves 2027 Football Opener to Arrowhead

The University of Nebraska will move its 2027 football opener against Miami University of Ohio from Lincoln to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, as Memorial Stadium enters a season of reduced capacity during a major rebuild.

The [university announced Tuesday](https://huskers.com/news/2026/09/22/2027-season-opener-moved-to-arrowhead-stadium?ref=theamericanquorum.com) that the game will be played Friday, Aug. 27, 2027\. It had been scheduled for Sept. 11 in Lincoln. Nebraska said a change to the Football Bowl Subdivision calendar made the earlier date possible and that the Big Ten is expected to place a conference game on the original date.

The move matters beyond the schedule. Memorial Stadium is a state-owned university facility and one of Nebraska’s largest recurring gathering places. The university’s [Big Red Rebuild timetable](https://bigredrebuild.com/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) calls for demolition of portions of the south and west seating bowls beginning in December 2026, construction in March 2027 and only partial completion by the 2027 season. Nebraska plans to conduct a full reseating process because capacity will be lower while work continues.

The renovation program says every season-ticket holder will select a new seat through a priority-based online process before the 2027 season. It also says legacy contribution rates will end and priority-seat contributions will be revalued for 2027 and 2028\. Those changes make the number and location of available Lincoln seats a practical concern separate from the neutral-site ticket sale.

Deputy athletic director and chief operating officer Haven Fields said discussions with the Kansas City Chiefs began after Nebraska opened its 2025 season at Arrowhead. He described the 2027 game as a way to use another major venue while Memorial Stadium has fewer seats, without reducing Nebraska’s Lincoln schedule below seven games.

The Kansas City contest will not be included in the 2027 season-ticket package, according to the university. Ticket prices, the on-sale schedule, television arrangements and the financial terms of the neutral-site agreement have not been released. Those details will determine how the shift affects season-ticket holders and the distribution of game-day spending between Lincoln and Kansas City.

Nebraska is 2-1 in games at Arrowhead since 1998, including a 20-17 victory over Cincinnati in the 2025 opener. The announcement gives fans one firm piece of a still-developing 2027 plan: Nebraska will keep seven games at Memorial Stadium, but one season-ticket package will exclude the Arrowhead opener. The university also cautioned that the revised FBS calendar could force additional changes to future nonconference dates.
