Maine’s statewide minimum wage will rise 60 cents to $15.70 an hour on Jan. 1, 2027, giving workers and employers a little more than three months to prepare for the change. The [Maine Department of Labor](https://www.maine.gov/labor/labor%5Flaws/minimumwagefaq/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) also set the minimum direct cash wage for tipped service employees at $7.85, up from $7.55.

The increase is nearly 4 percent. For someone paid the minimum and working 40 hours every week, it equals $24 more in gross weekly pay and $1,248 over a full year before taxes, according to the [Bangor Daily News](https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/09/18/politics/state-politics/maine-minimum-wage-increase-2027/?ref=theamericanquorum.com). Actual gains will vary with hours worked, unpaid time off and whether a higher local rate applies.

The same adjustment changes other payroll thresholds. The minimum weekly salary used in one part of Maine’s overtime exemption test will become $905.79, or $47,101.08 annually, the newspaper reported. Salary alone does not determine whether a worker is exempt: job duties and other legal tests still matter. Employers should therefore review classifications as well as pay rates rather than assuming a salary above that level automatically eliminates overtime eligibility.

Maine’s wage law ties annual increases to the August-to-August change in the federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers in the Northeast. The amount is then rounded to the nearest five cents. That indexing formula appears in [Title 26, Section 664](https://legislature.maine.gov/legis/statutes/26/title26sec664.html?ref=theamericanquorum.com), which has governed yearly adjustments since 2021\. The latest calculation followed a 4.1 percent rise in the regional index from August 2025 to August 2026.

For tipped employees, state law permits a tip credit of no more than half the applicable minimum wage. Beginning in January, an employer may pay $7.85 directly only if wages and tips together reach at least $15.70 for all hours worked. If they do not, the employer must cover the shortfall. Overtime for a worker receiving a tip credit is calculated from the full minimum wage, not the lower direct wage, the Labor Department’s [guidance](https://www.maine.gov/labor/labor%5Flaws/minimumwagefaq/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) says.

The state rate is a floor, not always the final number. Portland and Rockland have local minimum-wage ordinances, and Maine officials say the jurisdiction providing the greater protection generally governs. Businesses with employees moving between locations may need to track where the work was performed and apply the relevant local requirement. State guidance also reminds employers that federal, state and municipal poster and recordkeeping obligations can overlap.

The practical work now falls on payroll departments and small employers: update wage tables for the first 2027 pay period, check tipped-wage documentation, examine overtime classifications and replace required workplace posters. Workers can use the same date to compare pay stubs and confirm that any applicable local rate is being honored. The adjustment is automatic under existing law, so it does not require a new vote by the Legislature or a separate rulemaking before taking effect.
