# Louisiana Adds 5,500 Jobs as Jobless Rate Falls to 4.2%

Louisiana employers added an estimated 5,500 jobs in August, lifting seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls to a record 2.022 million while the unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a point to 4.2%. The gains extended a run of improving payroll figures, but the state’s labor force also contracted during the month, making the report stronger on hiring than on workforce participation.

The state’s [release](https://www.laworks.net/Downloads/LMI/LMIPressRelease%5F20260918%5FState.pdf?ref=theamericanquorum.com) said private employers added 5,600 jobs in August and 31,400 over the year, bringing private payrolls to a record 1,696,100\. Total payroll employment was 32,100 higher than in August 2025\. The figures are preliminary and subject to revision.

Trade, transportation and utilities led the monthly gains with 2,000 additional jobs. Private education and health services added 1,900 positions and reached a series high of 359,500, while construction gained 1,200\. Over the year, construction was up 17,200 jobs, education and health services rose by 7,900, and professional and business services added 7,000.

Federal [payroll tables](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/laus.t03.htm?ref=theamericanquorum.com) independently show Louisiana moving from 2.0165 million jobs in July to 2.022 million in August. They also put construction employment at 152,900, up 1,200 for the month and 17,200 from a year earlier. Those numbers help separate the broad record from the industries producing most of the growth.

The household survey presents a more mixed picture. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ [labor table](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/laus.t01.htm?ref=theamericanquorum.com) shows Louisiana’s civilian labor force falling by 3,118 people in August, to 2,107,450\. The number of unemployed residents declined by 3,964, to 88,198, while the number counted as employed edged higher. That combination lowered the jobless rate, but it means part of the improvement came as fewer people were in the labor force.

Month-to-month payroll estimates and the household survey measure different things: employers report jobs in the establishment survey, while households report the employment status of residents. One person can hold more than one payroll job, and the two surveys can move differently. The state also reported a 3.7% not-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, but seasonally adjusted figures are the better guide to short-term trends because they remove recurring hiring patterns.

The August increase follows a 5,700-job gain in July that ranked seventh among states, according to [USAFacts](https://usafacts.org/answers/how-many-jobs-were-added-in-the-us-last-month/state/louisiana/?ref=theamericanquorum.com). Louisiana Works said all 10 metropolitan areas had more jobs than a year earlier, led by a 14,600-job increase in Baton Rouge. More detailed August metro and parish data are scheduled for September 30, which will show whether statewide gains were broadly distributed or concentrated in a few regions.

The report therefore supports two conclusions at once: employer demand improved and payrolls reached records, while the pool of residents working or seeking work slipped. The September statewide release on October 20 will show whether August’s hiring momentum continued and whether the labor force stabilized, an important distinction for employers facing workforce constraints.
