# Illinois Opens Search for First State Public Defender

Illinois is accepting applications through October 9 for its first State Public Defender, a new statewide official charged with building the infrastructure, standards and regional presence for a public-defense system that has historically been organized county by county.

The position is full time, pays $218,400 a year and bars private practice. Applicants must have at least five years of legal experience as well as criminal-defense and administrative experience.

The hire will lead an independent agency within the judicial branch. Its early work will include creating the state office, developing a funding structure, recruiting leadership and opening regional offices. The system is intended to support representation not only in criminal cases, but also in juvenile-delinquency and dependency matters where people are constitutionally or statutorily entitled to counsel.
