Southwest Airlines is redesigning its Rapid Rewards program around a new three-level status system, expanded redemption choices and a broader premium-travel strategy. The changes, announced Thursday and scheduled to begin in stages during 2027, will affect how frequent fliers qualify for status, use points and obtain companion benefits.

## Silver, Gold and a new Platinum tier

Beginning Jan. 1, Southwest will rename A-List status as Silver and A-List Preferred as Gold, while adding Platinum above them. The airline’s [announcement](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/more-to-love-from-rapid-rewards-southwest-airlines-expands-rewards-redemption-and-member-benefits-ce785dd3df81f524?ref=theamericanquorum.com) says Platinum will include unlimited Companion Pass trips, subject to the program’s booking rules and seat availability. Between Gold and Platinum, members will be able to qualify for three Companion Pass trips.

The redesign also introduces milestone rewards before a member reaches Silver. Southwest said travelers will be able to choose benefits such as Rapid Rewards points or seat certificates along the way, rather than waiting until a full status threshold is reached. It is a meaningful shift from a program long centered on two elite levels and a separate Companion Pass qualification track.

[Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/southwest-revamps-loyalty-program-with-new-premium-tiers-2026-10-15/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) described the changes as part of Southwest’s effort to deepen benefits for higher-spending travelers. The airline has been moving beyond several hallmarks of its traditional low-cost identity, including open seating, while adding products intended to compete more directly for premium customers.

## Credit-card spending gains a larger role

Every Southwest Rapid Rewards credit-card holder, including holders of the Plus card, will earn one tier-qualifying point for each dollar spent on purchases beginning in 2027, according to the airline. That gives card spending a more direct and uniform role in attaining Silver, Gold or Platinum status. Travelers should still compare the value of the benefits they expect to use with any annual fee, interest cost and opportunity cost attached to a card.

The carrier has not presented the overhaul as a reduction in the basic ability to earn points from flying. Instead, the central change is a wider ladder of benefits and more ways to advance. [Business Travel News](https://www.businesstravelnews.com/Transportation/Air/southwest-revamps-loyalty-program-adds-tier?ref=theamericanquorum.com) reported that the new structure takes effect Jan. 1, giving frequent corporate travelers and travel managers a short window to assess how existing status will translate.

## More redemption options, including partner flights

Southwest plans to add international airline redemptions in spring 2027 through loyalty partnerships with Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad Airways. Members are expected to be able to earn and redeem Rapid Rewards points through those relationships, extending the program beyond Southwest’s own network. Later in the year, points will also be usable for seat selection on Southwest-operated flights, including Extra Legroom and Preferred seats.

Rental-car redemptions are scheduled sooner. Beginning in November 2026, members will be able to use points for rentals from participating providers through Southwest’s car-booking site. The airline’s dedicated [2027 program page](https://www.southwest.com/rapid-rewards/2027/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) is the most relevant place for members to monitor final qualification requirements, redemption terms and effective dates as they are posted.

Those details will determine the practical value of the changes. A new redemption channel can make points more flexible, but the value received per point may vary by option, date and availability. Travelers should review the cash price alongside the points price before transferring attention away from flight awards. Award availability and partner booking rules may also shape whether the international options work smoothly.

## Lounges and fleetwide connectivity

The loyalty overhaul is tied to Southwest’s wider premium push. The airline says its Southwest Icon Lounge network, built with Chase, will begin opening in late 2027\. Access will be available through a new premium Southwest credit card due the same year. The carrier previously identified Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville as its first lounge markets; [earlier reporting](https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/southwest-launch-first-ever-airport-lounges-broaden-premium-appeal-2026-09-02/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) noted that the plan is meant to strengthen customer retention and co-branded-card revenue.

Southwest also says it expects to complete fleetwide Starlink installation in fall 2027, with Wi-Fi free to Rapid Rewards members through a T-Mobile arrangement. That benefit is broader than elite status and could matter more to occasional travelers than a lounge or top-tier companion privilege.

## What travelers should watch

For current members, the key questions are the final thresholds for each tier, the conversion of existing status, the rules governing milestone choices and the redemption value offered by new partners. The headline benefits are substantial, particularly at Platinum, but their value will depend on how much flying and card spending the program requires.

The announcement gives Southwest a more conventional airline-loyalty ladder at the same time it is differentiating the program with companion benefits. It also makes Rapid Rewards more complex. Travelers who once evaluated the program primarily on Southwest flights and the Companion Pass will now have to weigh status, cards, partners, seats, lounges and nonflight redemptions together. The result could be more useful for members who engage across several products, while casual fliers will need to check whether the added choices deliver better value for their own trips.
