# Two South Africa Mass Shootings Kill at Least 27

South African police launched two major manhunts Sunday after separate mass shootings in townships near Johannesburg and Cape Town killed at least 27 people and wounded 26 others within a few hours. ## Attack in Wedela

The first shooting occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Wedela, a township in Gauteng province southwest of Johannesburg. Police said eight gunmen armed with AK-47-style rifles and pistols opened fire on patrons outside a tavern and then moved inside, continuing to shoot. Emergency services declared 13 men and four women dead at the scene, while 15 wounded people were taken to medical facilities.

Police said the attackers searched some patrons and took cellphones before fleeing in two unidentified vehicles. ## Second shooting near Cape Town

Roughly four hours later, another group of gunmen attacked an entertainment venue in Lwandle, a township near Cape Town. Police said 10 people were killed and 11 wounded at about 1:46 a.m. Sunday. Officials did not report evidence connecting the attacks. The locations are more than 800 miles apart, and early police statements described them as separate investigations. That distinction matters because simultaneous reporting can create the impression of a coordinated campaign before evidence supports such a conclusion. Authorities had released few details about the Lwandle assailants or the sequence of events inside the venue.

## What remains unknown

Investigators were working to identify the shooters, trace the vehicles used in Wedela and determine how the weapons were obtained. They also faced the immediate tasks of interviewing survivors, processing two large crime scenes and notifying victims’ families. Police had not disclosed whether surveillance video, ballistic evidence or witness descriptions had produced firm leads.

## Violence despite a statistical decline

South Africa has recorded some improvement in recent quarterly crime data, but the absolute level of lethal violence remains high. The decline represented 546 fewer killings, but still averaged more than 57 murders a day over the three-month period.

In releasing those figures, acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said the national murder rate for the quarter was 8.2 per 100,000 people. ## Townships carry disproportionate risk

South African mass shootings have repeatedly struck taverns, informal settlements and private gatherings in communities where residents say police response is uneven and illegal firearms are readily available. The setting does not establish a motive in the two latest attacks, but it shapes the challenge facing investigators: crowded venues, limited camera coverage and fear of retaliation can make witness cooperation difficult.

Police previously described targeted tavern attacks as potentially involving conflicts among criminal groups, extortion or interpersonal disputes, but the causes vary widely. Officials cautioned against drawing conclusions in the Wedela and Lwandle cases until suspects are identified and evidence is tested. The early priority is establishing who carried out each attack and whether anyone helped plan or facilitate them.

## National scrutiny ahead

The scale and timing of the killings are likely to bring renewed parliamentary and public scrutiny of police intelligence, firearm trafficking and protection for high-risk venues. The government has pointed to recent reductions in reported murders as evidence that enforcement measures can work, while acknowledging that violent crime remains unacceptably high.

For the affected communities, the statistical trend offers little comfort. Twenty-seven people died in a single night, and more than two dozen survivors face treatment and recovery. Police urged anyone with information to come forward as specialized teams pursued the gunmen. Until arrests are made, the central facts remain limited but stark: two distinct attacks, two distant townships and a combined toll that deepens South Africa’s continuing crisis of lethal violence.
