Nine people were found dead after a mass shooting at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening, including eight victims and the suspected shooter, authorities said. In a Saturday [city update](https://www.erie.pa.us/news%5Fdetail%5FT13%5FR741.php?ref=theamericanquorum.com), investigators confirmed the toll and said every death occurred before police reached the scene. Police have said there is no continuing threat to the public, according to the city and an [AP report](https://apnews.com/article/nine-killed-shooting-erie-pennsylvania-563c7c4262d47858dabecc43485c6483?ref=theamericanquorum.com).

The new official timeline corrects a central element of the first accounts. The city said officers arrived within minutes of receiving a ShotSpotter alert near East Seventh and Perry streets. It said no additional gunshots were fired after police arrived and that sounds some witnesses believed were gunfire were flash-bang devices used in the tactical response. Officers initially had limited information about whether an armed person remained inside and continued assessing the scene while seeking a search warrant.

Early [CBS coverage](https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/erie-pennsylvania-mass-shooting-perry-street/?ref=theamericanquorum.com), relying on local reporting, described an hours-long standoff and said two children were among the dead. The city’s update did not identify the victims, confirm their ages or describe their relationship to the shooter. Until police release those details, the confirmed record is narrower: nine people died, the suspected shooter is among them and investigators say the killings were complete before officers arrived.

The Associated Press reported that the suspected shooter appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said the scale of the loss was unlike anything he had encountered in more than 28 years. Police have not announced a motive, identified the firearm or said whether the victims were members of one family. Authorities also had not said whether anyone was wounded but survived, whether other people were inside the home or whether investigators recovered more than one firearm.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he had spoken with Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and offered the state’s full support. His statement was also reported by [Reuters](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/nine-dead-in-erie-pennsylvania-mass-shooting-ce785ddcdd8ef023?ref=theamericanquorum.com), which said authorities confirmed all nine deaths occurred before officers arrived. Shapiro did not specify what investigative, forensic or victim-support resources the state would provide.

## What happens next

The City of Erie scheduled a 4 p.m. news conference for Saturday and said it would stream the briefing through its official Facebook and YouTube channels. Police are expected to address the sequence of events, victim identification, the suspected shooter’s relationship to those killed and the evidence supporting the determination that the gunfire had ended before officers arrived.

The distinction between the early standoff narrative and the city’s corrected chronology is consequential. It changes the public understanding of whether people were in danger during the police response and whether tactical delays affected the death toll. At present, officials say they did not: all nine deaths preceded the arrival of responding officers.

The city said crisis counseling is available at 814-456-2014 for residents affected by the shooting. Authorities asked the public to preserve the integrity of the investigation and the privacy of grieving families as verified information is released.
