# NATS Finds Millisecond Software Flaw Behind U.K. Flight Chaos

More than 2,000 flights were delayed, canceled or diverted after a one-millisecond software failure corrupted data in Britain’s air-traffic system, according to a [NATS report](https://www.nats.aero/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/NATS-Preliminary-Investigation-Report-into-NAS-Incident-on-08-Sept-2026-Issued-16-Sept-2026.pdf?ref=theamericanquorum.com) released Friday. The September 8 outage forced nationwide traffic restrictions for roughly six hours, even though the defective software primarily affected the London Area Control center, and disrupted hundreds of thousands of travelers for more than two days.

The preliminary findings give the first detailed account of how an obscure flaw in a system that assigns aircraft identification codes escalated into one of Britain’s largest recent aviation disruptions. NATS said the event was not caused by human error, military activity or a cyberattack. The operator has installed temporary safeguards while a permanent software fix undergoes testing, but the government has ordered an independent regulatory review of the findings and of NATS’s investment in resilience.

## A routine request hit a hidden defect

The failure began when the National Airspace System, a core flight-data platform, processed a valid manual request for a “squawk” code used to match an aircraft’s radar track with its flight plan. A higher-priority task interrupted that request during an exposure window estimated at about one millisecond. When processing resumed, a previously unknown defect caused the system to update the data incorrectly, the report said.

The corrupted record did not immediately shut down the network. At 10:02 a.m., the link between the national system and London Area Control dropped for 45 seconds, then recovered. Engineers opened a routine investigation after finding no hardware fault. At 12:32 p.m., repeated attempts to process the corrupted data destabilized the link again, forcing controllers to take over some coordination tasks manually. NATS then declared a major incident and began restricting traffic.

## A local fault produced nationwide limits

London Area Control manages higher-altitude traffic over England and Wales and normally handles about 6,500 flights on a September day. When automation became unavailable, controllers had to coordinate aircraft handoffs with neighboring centers manually. Because those procedures take longer, NATS limited entries into sectors, stopped departures from British airports and restricted some international flights bound for Britain.

The operator said it expected to handle about 8,000 flights that day but recorded 6,094\. Engineers restarted the system between 3:17 p.m. and 4:09 p.m., then spent nearly three hours reconciling duplicate flight plans, mismatched call signs and identification-code anomalies across connected systems. Full data synchronization was restored at 6:50 p.m., and the final airspace restrictions were lifted at 7:30 p.m. The backlog continued into the following days as airlines repositioned aircraft and crews.

## The explanation does not end the scrutiny

NATS says the defect was unrelated to a 2023 flight-planning failure or a radar problem in July 2025\. It also says a supplier has delivered a permanent repair and that new escalation procedures should allow faster recovery if another link failure occurs. Those claims remain preliminary: the operator’s full investigation, due within 60 days of the incident, will examine monitoring, defect records, asset management and whether lessons from earlier failures were applied.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called the disruption unacceptable and asked the Civil Aviation Authority to independently test NATS’s account and examine its future investment plans. For affected travelers, the technical cause matters because it shapes which remedies are available. Airlines must still provide care regardless of the cause. Those are the central issues for NATS’s final report and the CAA’s independent review.

For travelers and airlines, the lasting significance is not that an unusual software race occurred, but that a millisecond-scale error reduced capacity across an international aviation hub for hours and produced disruption lasting days. The permanent fix may close this specific fault. The next test is whether regulators can demonstrate that the wider system is resilient enough to keep another isolated failure from propagating through Britain’s aviation network.
