# Samsung Unveils Galaxy S24 With Built-In Generative AI, $1,300 Ultra and Google Gemini Integration

Samsung this week unveiled its Galaxy S24 smartphone line with artificial intelligence—not camera hardware or screen size—positioned as the defining feature of its newest flagship devices. The company is combining on-device models, cloud-based generative AI and Google services to add live translation, transcription, summarization, photo editing and a new gesture-based search experience directly into everyday phone workflows.

The Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra were introduced Wednesday at Samsung’s Unpacked event in San Jose. Samsung’s [event highlights](https://news.samsung.com/us/highlights-from-galaxy-unpacked/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) describe “Galaxy AI” as a collection of communication, productivity and imaging tools intended to make generative AI useful without requiring users to open a separate chatbot.

U.S. starting prices are $799.99 for the S24, $999.99 for the S24+ and $1,299.99 for the S24 Ultra, with general availability scheduled for January 31\. The pricing keeps Samsung in the familiar premium-smartphone range while asking consumers to evaluate AI software as part of the hardware upgrade case.

## AI moves from a separate app into the phone interface

One of the most visible features is Live Translate, which can provide two-way voice and text translation during phone calls. Samsung says the capability supports multiple languages without requiring both participants to use the same application. Interpreter mode similarly creates a split-screen translation interface for face-to-face conversations.

Samsung Notes can format and summarize text, while Transcript Assist can convert recorded speech into text and identify speakers. Generative Edit can reposition or remove objects from photographs and fill missing areas with synthesized pixels. The company is also using AI to suggest edits rather than requiring users to manipulate complex photo controls manually.

[TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/17/samsungs-galaxy-s24-will-feature-google-gemini-powered-ai-features/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) reported that Gemini Pro will support summarization and language capabilities in Samsung apps, while Google’s smaller Gemini Nano model can run on-device for selected functions such as Magic Compose in Google Messages.

## Google becomes a central AI supplier to Samsung

The S24 launch expands the long-running Samsung-Google partnership beyond Android itself. Samsung and Google Cloud announced a [multi-year agreement](https://news.samsung.com/us/samsung-google-cloud-bring-generative-ai-to-samsung-galaxy-s24-series?ref=theamericanquorum.com) making the Galaxy S24 the first smartphone series to deploy Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 through Vertex AI at commercial scale.

Gemini Pro can process text, code, images and video, allowing Samsung applications to use one model family across multiple input types. Imagen 2 supports image-generation and editing functions. Samsung says customer data used through the enterprise-grade Vertex AI infrastructure will receive Google Cloud security, privacy and compliance protections.

Google is also introducing Circle to Search, a feature that allows users to circle, highlight, scribble on or tap something visible on the screen and launch a Google search without leaving the current app. Google’s [January 17 announcement](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/android/google-ai-samsung-galaxy-s24/?ref=theamericanquorum.com) presents the feature as a new search interaction rather than a Samsung-only application, showing how AI features are becoming part of the Android platform layer.

## New silicon is designed around local AI workloads

Hardware still matters because some AI functions must execute quickly on the phone. Qualcomm said its customized [Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy](https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2024/01/qualcomm-and-samsung-bring-the-most-advanced-snapdragon-ever-to-?ref=theamericanquorum.com) powers the S24 Ultra globally and selected S24 and S24+ models. The chip includes an upgraded neural-processing engine designed for generative-AI workloads as well as graphics and camera improvements.

Running models locally can reduce latency and allow selected capabilities to operate without sending every request to a cloud server. Cloud models remain useful for more computationally intensive tasks. The S24 architecture therefore reflects a hybrid strategy: decide which AI functions can run on the device and which benefit from larger remote models.

The Ultra also receives a materials upgrade. Samsung pairs that glass with a titanium frame on the Ultra.

## The smartphone becomes a mass distribution channel for generative AI

The strategic significance extends beyond Samsung’s market share. Generative AI gained public attention through web services such as ChatGPT and image generators, but smartphones can put similar technology into the hands of hundreds of millions of people through functions they already use every day.

The [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/7e0a8d8d7aea1efc5b54c9301e53b684?ref=theamericanquorum.com) described Samsung’s launch as a bet that AI tools will motivate consumers in a mature smartphone market where year-to-year hardware changes have become less dramatic. That bet puts pressure on Apple, Google and Chinese handset makers to explain what their own AI systems can do in routine communication and productivity.

It also creates questions about privacy, accuracy and cost. Live translation and summarization can be useful only if their errors are acceptable in the context where they are used. Generative photo editing raises questions about authenticity, which is why Samsung says edited images will include metadata and visible indicators when generative changes are applied.

## AI is becoming the new platform competition

Samsung is not developing every underlying model itself. Instead, it is assembling a stack that includes its own interface and features, Qualcomm silicon, Google’s Android services, Gemini models and cloud infrastructure. That arrangement illustrates how the next smartphone competition may be less about a single company owning every layer and more about which ecosystem can integrate models, chips and applications most effectively.

The S24 series still competes on traditional specifications: display quality, battery life, camera systems, build materials and processor performance. But the launch presentation makes clear that Samsung sees those specifications as the foundation rather than the headline.

The practical test begins when consumers receive the phones at the end of January. Features such as translation, transcript summaries, Circle to Search and generative photo editing will be judged not by benchmark demonstrations but by whether they are reliable enough to become habits.

For now, Samsung has made a clear strategic choice. Its 2024 flagship is being sold as an AI device first and a faster smartphone second. If that framing succeeds, generative AI could move rapidly from a specialized software category into a standard expectation for the device most people already carry all day.
