But the figure is an estimate, not a cancellation list: minimum-service requirements have not been settled, talks are continuing, and easyJet has said it will try to limit disruption. ## Two strike windows target busy travel periods Portugal-based cabin crew voted Thursday to strike from Oct. 2 through Oct. 6 and again from Dec. 19 through Dec. 23\. The Sindicato Nacional do Pessoal de Voo da Aviação Civil, or SNPVAC, estimates that roughly 500 scheduled flights could be affected in the first period alone. The December stoppage could carry a larger operational impact because it falls in the final days before Christmas, when schedules and passenger loads are typically heavier. The same report stressed that minimum services will be negotiated later, leaving the final number of disrupted flights unresolved. ## The dispute centers on schedules and staffing SNPVAC says working conditions for Portuguese cabin crew have continued to deteriorate despite repeated warnings. Its complaints include unstable rosters, alleged breaches of the company agreement, different treatment from pilots in compensation discussions, operational-planning failures and pressure to work overtime to cover staffing shortages. EasyJet said it was “extremely disappointed” by the strike plan and described the union’s demands as unworkable. The airline said its Portugal-based crew are paid above the national average and that it remains engaged in mediated discussions intended to address employee concerns while protecting the sustainability of its Portuguese operation. Those positions frame the dispute, but neither side has announced a settlement timetable. The talks are being mediated by Portugal’s General Directorate for Employment and Labor Relations. Its involvement keeps a negotiated outcome possible before October, although the strike authorization gives the union leverage if the talks do not produce an agreement. ## Minimum-service rules will shape the disruption Portugal can require essential service during transport strikes, and the scope of those protections will determine how closely actual cancellations match the union’s estimate. Until that process is complete, travelers should not treat all 500 flights as canceled. The exposed schedule is broad, but the final operating plan may preserve selected routes or frequencies. That distinction matters for connecting itineraries. A canceled flight from a Portuguese base can also disrupt a later segment booked separately, while a service that operates under a reduced schedule may still face congestion or delays. The first reliable indication for any individual booking will be a direct airline notice or a change in the live flight status, rather than the overall union projection. ## EU rules offer rerouting, refunds and care Passengers whose flights are canceled can generally choose reimbursement or rerouting under European law. The airline also tells passengers to retain itemized receipts when it cannot arrange reasonable meals, lodging or local transportation directly. ## The next decisions will determine the real scale The strike vote is consequential because it spans ten days across two separate travel periods and reaches all three easyJet bases in Portugal. Yet its practical effect will turn on three developments: whether mediation produces a deal, which minimum services authorities require, and how quickly easyJet publishes any revised schedule. Travelers booked for Oct. 2–6 or Dec. 19–23 should monitor their reservation and flight status, preserve airline messages and avoid assuming that the union’s estimate applies to every service.
