- Description: Airlines canceled flights at Chennai and three Andhra Pradesh airports as Cyclone Murasu approached. Passengers face separate questions about flight schedules and ground access after the storm came ashore.

Airlines canceled flights at four airports in southern India on Monday, Nov. 2, as Cyclone Murasu approached from the Bay of Bengal. Chennai airport announced 11 cancellations, while at least 19 domestic services were canceled across Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati, according to airport officials and reporting by the [TOI](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/cyclone-murusu-19-flights-cancelled-ndrf-on-standby-as-coastal-states-brace-for-severe-storm-top-development/articleshow/135465378.cms?ref=theamericanquorum.com). The storm came ashore near Ongole on the southern Andhra Pradesh coast early Tuesday, local time.

The cancellations show how a storm can interrupt travel far from the point where its center crosses land. Chennai, to the south in Tamil Nadu, had already experienced heavy rain when its airport issued the cancellations. In Andhra Pradesh, the affected airports serve different parts of the state. The figures describe flights that were canceled as the storm approached; they are not a tally of Tuesday disruptions or evidence that any of the four airports closed.

## Chennai and Vijayawada account for most reported cuts

Chennai airport described the cancellations as a precaution and directed passengers to the airlines handling their flights, according to [NDTV Profit](https://www.ndtvprofit.com/india/cyclone-murasu-flight-cancellations-train-disruptions-and-travel-advisories-12270039?ref=theamericanquorum.com), which reproduced the airport's notice. The [route list](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/cyclone-murasu-chennai-airport-cancels-11-flights-check-affected-routes-and-flight-numbers/articleshow/135448014.cms?ref=theamericanquorum.com) included regional links with Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kadapa and Tiruchirappalli. The cuts therefore mattered to passengers traveling within southern India and to those relying on a domestic flight to reach an onward departure from Chennai.

At Vijayawada, the airport director told the Times of India that IndiGo canceled 10 flights and Air India Express canceled two. Visakhapatnam recorded four cancellations and Tirupati three. Those counts describe airport operations, so adding them to Chennai's figure can double-count a flight between two affected airports. They also do not show how many passengers were rebooked or how many seats were available on the services that continued to operate.

The distinction between a route and a departure matters when looking for a substitute. A cancellation notice naming a flight to Vijayawada does not mean every flight between the two cities was withdrawn, and an airport-wide departure board may show another carrier still selling seats on a different service. Travelers switching carriers should confirm which airport and terminal the new booking uses and whether checked luggage can be transferred to the onward flight. The airport's notice directed travelers to their carriers for assistance because those arrangements depend on the booking.

## Landfall and safe access follow different timelines

Before landfall, an India Meteorological Department [coastal bulletin](https://mausam.imd.gov.in/Forecast/coastal%5Fbulletin%5Fnew.php?id=6&ref=theamericanquorum.com) projected winds of 100 to 110 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 120, as the cyclone crossed between Nellore and Narsapur. The same bulletin warned that visibility along the north Tamil Nadu coast could become very poor in heavy rain and flagged rough seas off Chennai and neighboring coastal districts. Those were forecasts for the affected areas, not measurements of conditions on individual airport runways.

Andhra Pradesh's [disaster authority](https://apsdmagis.ap.gov.in/weather-watch/cyclone.html?ref=theamericanquorum.com) also posted alerts for intense rain and strong winds across several districts. A flight shown as operating can still be difficult to reach if local roads are waterlogged. For a traveler, the relevant questions are when the airline expects to depart and whether the route to the terminal is open. An improvement in one does not establish that the other has recovered.

## Rail and road alternatives need separate checks

NDTV Profit reported no train disruptions at the time of its Monday afternoon update, before the cyclone reached the coast. That snapshot does not establish that every Tuesday service ran as scheduled. It does, however, distinguish the confirmed flight cancellations from the wider risk to surface transport. A traveler considering rail as a substitute needs to check the specific train and the road or transit connection to its departure station.

In Vijayawada, [Economic Times](https://m.economictimes.com/news/new-updates/cyclone-murasu-tracker-where-is-the-storm-now-check-location-landfall-time-and-wind-speed/articleshow/135443923.cms?ref=theamericanquorum.com) reported waterlogging on major roads after sustained rain. That makes an itinerary through another airport a more complicated choice than a timetable suggests. A replacement seat is useful only if the passenger can reach it with enough time to check in. A proposed detour by road can add a second point of uncertainty when the weather affecting the original airport is also affecting the roads between cities.

## What to verify before leaving for the airport

Passengers should use the operating carrier's flight number and the local departure date when checking an itinerary. A general airport update can confirm that service is running, but a booking notice is more useful for establishing whether a particular flight was canceled or changed. Passengers with onward flights should also confirm the new connection before accepting a change, particularly when different carriers or separate tickets are involved.

The available reports establish where the first cuts occurred, but they do not establish when the affected routes will return to normal. Monday's canceled flights are a guide to where disruption was concentrated, not a prediction of Tuesday's schedule. The next useful updates for travelers are confirmed departures on the affected regional routes, any new cancellation notices and local reports on access to airports and stations.
