Three children and a teacher were killed at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, after a 16-year-old gunman forced his way inside, police said. An armed community member pursued the attacker into the school and fatally shot him, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz’s account reported by [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/shooter-is-killed-oregon-elementary-school-least-two-taken-away-ambulance-2026-10-15/?ref=theamericanquorum.com).

The children killed were 5, 8 and 11\. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized with critical injuries, authorities said. Those details were independently reported by [ABC News](https://abcnews.com/US/multiple-people-injured-shooting-oregon-elementary-school-suspect/story?id=137303119&ref=theamericanquorum.com). The four victims’ deaths were separate from the death of the suspected shooter.

## Gunfire reported before school entry

The [police timeline](https://flashalert.net/id/BendPolice?ref=theamericanquorum.com) began at 12:59 p.m. Pacific time, when a caller reported that a man had fired into a car. Within the next minute, Deschutes County dispatchers received multiple emergency calls reporting that a person had entered the school and begun shooting. Officers reached the scene at 1:02 p.m.; seconds later, they reported that the suspect had been shot and killed.

Krantz said the initial investigation indicated that the gunman fired at locked doors to gain entry. The school had been directed into lockdown at 1:01 p.m., ABC reported. Police subsequently evacuated classrooms, and school buses carried students to Journey Church for reunification with their families, according to the department’s written account.

The department’s initial written release described a possible bystander intervention and did not provide a death toll. Krantz’s later briefing supplied the casualty figures and said a community member had followed the suspect inside and confronted him.

## Schools close across the district

Bend-La Pine Schools canceled Friday classes, activities and athletic events across the district. A [district notice](https://mountainview.blschools.org/news?ref=theamericanquorum.com) displayed on its school websites explicitly ties the October 16 closure to the Silver Rail shooting. The cancellation extends the disruption beyond the elementary campus to families throughout the district.

Superintendent Steven Cook said the immediate priorities were caring for students and staff while assisting law enforcement and emergency responders. His statement appeared in the police release and was also reported by [KPTV](https://www.kptv.com/2026/10/15/bend-police-respond-report-active-shooter-silver-rail-elementary-school/?ref=theamericanquorum.com). The district describes itself as serving 16,700 students in kindergarten through high school on its [official website](https://www.blschools.org/?ref=theamericanquorum.com).

## Key questions remain unresolved

Police identified the suspected attacker as a 16-year-old Bend resident but had not publicly released his name in the reporting reviewed Friday morning. They had not established publicly whether he previously attended Silver Rail or knew anyone there, according to the [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/oregon-school-shooting-silver-rail-elementary-b0642ec5cd3da0db24227a2798e2c6ce?ref=theamericanquorum.com) and ABC.

The community member who confronted him also had not been publicly identified. Krantz warned of a lengthy investigation, according to Reuters and KPTV. The confirmed account of forced entry does not, by itself, establish why the school was targeted.

## Recovery begins alongside investigation

Residents gathered for a candlelight vigil at Drake Park Thursday night, a gathering documented by KPTV and ABC. Governor Tina Kotek thanked the civilian who intervened as well as educators and emergency responders.

In its own [recovery statement](https://apps.oregon.gov/oregon-newsroom/OR/OEM/Posts/Post/Condolences-and-Offers-Support-Bend?ref=theamericanquorum.com), Oregon’s Department of Emergency Management said state education, health and human-services agencies were working with partners to support the community. The department urged people to avoid the affected area, respect families’ privacy and refrain from sharing unverified reports or identifying information. Its guidance directs residents to police and school-district communications as the investigation continues.
