After seven Virgin Voyages cruises, Terrance Bortell keeps returning for the crew, dining and atmosphere. His concern is whether the line can keep the personality that made him a repeat passenger while giving returning travelers enough new experiences.

Bortell reports sailing on every ship in the fleet except Brilliant Lady. His assessment reflects those trips, rather than a firsthand review of the entire current fleet. It is largely favorable, with reservations about cabin bathrooms and parts of the entertainment program.

For travelers considering the line, his experience offers a useful distinction: liking a cruise enough to book again does not mean overlooking its limitations.

## An atmosphere that feels different

Virgin’s [age policy](https://www.virginvoyages.com/faq/before-you-sail/pre-voyage-policies?ref=theamericanquorum.com) requires passengers to be at least 18\. That makes it an option for adults traveling without children, rather than for a family cruise with younger passengers.

For Bortell, the appeal goes beyond that rule. He describes an onboard setting that feels playful and social, where he can be himself without feeling out of place. That sense of belonging is one of the main reasons he continues to recommend the line.

He gives particular credit to the crew. On his sailings, he found staff engaged and approachable, creating a combination of attentive service and informality that suited him. Those are observations from his own trips; another passenger’s experience may depend on the sailing, staff and expectations they bring aboard.

Bortell also singles out the Happenings Cast and The Diva, the drag performer he encountered onboard, as part of the atmosphere he values. To him, their presence helped make the ship feel welcoming and less formal.

## Dining is a reason to return

Food is another strong point in Bortell’s account. He considers himself a selective eater, while some of his traveling companions are more adventurous. He says the restaurants have accommodated both approaches and describes the meals he has had as consistently satisfying.

Extra Virgin, the Italian restaurant, is his favorite. An affogato stands out in his recollection, as does a steak he enjoyed despite not usually choosing that dish. His favorable comparison with other cruise lines is a personal assessment, rather than a claim that one fleet’s food is objectively better.

Virgin’s published [dining information](https://www.virginvoyages.com/cruise-dining?ref=theamericanquorum.com) describes a restaurant-based approach without traditional buffets. The Galley brings together food stations, including a diner the line lists as operating around the clock. Bortell particularly appreciates being able to get breakfast at unconventional hours.

That flexibility does not eliminate the need to plan. Virgin recommends reservations for its popular signature restaurants. Travelers with dietary requirements should confirm what the ship can accommodate before booking and discuss their needs with the dining team.

## The hammock, and the bathroom trade-off

Bortell finds the cabins modern and thoughtfully arranged. His favorite feature is the balcony hammock, a place to pause between activities or spend time watching the water.

Virgin’s [Sea Terrace](https://www.virginvoyages.com/cabins?ref=theamericanquorum.com) description says almost all cabins in that category have a terrace hammock. The qualification matters: travelers for whom it is essential should confirm the specific cabin’s features rather than assume every balcony has one.

The bathroom is his main cabin criticism. He found standard cabin bathrooms small and would consider an XL category or a suite when more space matters. That is a reason to compare actual layouts before paying for an upgrade, rather than a guarantee that any higher category will meet a particular traveler’s needs.

Anyone with mobility or other access requirements should confirm the suitability of the individual cabin with the line. A favorable account of its design cannot substitute for that check.

## Entertainment is where the questions begin

Scarlet Night is a highlight for Bortell, and he enjoyed the acrobatic production Duel Reality on his sailings. Other entertainment left him less impressed, particularly when he compared it with performances he has seen on Celebrity and Disney cruises.

His concern is partly about repetition. After several trips, he wants more reasons to discover something new. A returning passenger’s desire for variety is different from a first-time visitor’s response to a show they have never seen.

The current [show lineup](https://www.virginvoyages.com/cruise-entertainment?ref=theamericanquorum.com) also varies by ship. Brilliant Lady, which Bortell has not sailed, lists productions including Disco Circus and Murder in the Manor. His experience therefore does not establish that entertainment is unchanged across the fleet. Travelers should review the program for their intended ship, and should not assume a production mentioned in a past trip report will be available on their voyage.

## What he hopes Virgin will preserve

Bortell’s larger worry is that Virgin could become more conventional and lose some of the character he enjoys. He offers that as a concern about Virgin’s future, rather than a documented fleetwide change in its onboard experience.

Those reservations have not erased the reasons he returns. Crew interactions, a comfortable social atmosphere and meals he enjoys keep bringing him back. More varied entertainment would strengthen that appeal. For now, he remains interested in another sailing, hoping that new offerings will complement the personality that drew him to Virgin in the first place.
